How to guide
Introduction
A Programme Dependencies Log is a critical tool used in programme management to document and track the interdependencies among various tasks, projects, and stakeholders within a programme. This log ensures that all dependencies are clearly identified, managed, and monitored, helping to avoid delays and conflicts that could impact the overall programme timeline and success.

Purpose
The primary purpose of a Programme Dependencies Log is to provide a structured approach to managing dependencies, allowing programme managers to anticipate potential bottlenecks and take proactive measures to address them. By having a clear record of dependencies, teams can better coordinate their efforts and ensure seamless progression of the programme.
Key Components
- Dependency ID: A unique identifier for each action item to ensure easy tracking and reference.
- Created: timestamp of when the action was first created.
- Category: Action category to allow filtering on action types or meetings
- Dependency Description: A detailed description of the dependency, including the tasks, projects, or stakeholders involved.
- Inbound / Outbound: Type of depenency inbound or outbound.
- Delivery Team: The team delivering the dependency.
- Planned Actions: A detailed explanation of the action, providing enough context to understand its importance and relevance.
- Update: An update on the progress of the dependency actions or additional notes or comments related to the action item, such as updates on progress, challenges encountered, or any other relevant information.
- Owner: The individual or team responsible for carrying out the action. This ensures clear ownership and accountability.
- Due Date: The deadline by which the action must be completed. This helps in prioritising tasks and managing timelines effectively. Due dates should be contracted with the owner and should not be changed.
- Priority: Identification of actions that are high priority or need to be escalated through other governance forums.
- Days: The days until the target date for the action closure.
- Closed: A timestamp when the action is closed.
Benefits
- Enhanced Coordination: Ensures all interdependencies are identified and managed, promoting better coordination among teams.
- Proactive Management: Helps anticipate potential delays and conflicts, allowing for proactive measures to be taken.
- Improved Communication: Facilitates communication among team members and stakeholders by providing a centralised record of dependencies.
- Increased Accountability: Assigns responsibility for managing dependencies, ensuring they are actively monitored and addressed.
By maintaining a well-organized Programme Dependencies Log, programme managers can effectively navigate the complexities of interrelated tasks and projects, ultimately leading to a more efficient and successful programme delivery.
